Sekolah Ciputra Surabaya ICT WORKSHOP (December 6th, 2011)

The ICT workshop was held in December 6th, 2010 in Sekolah Ciputra Surabaya. The participants were all elementary and pre-elementary teachers. The key note speaker was Jane Ross from SinarMas World Academy (SWA). The workshop aims to give teachers more perspectives on the use of ICT in the integrated classroom. There were three sessions in the workshop. The first session and second session were delivered by Jane Ross. The first session was mainly about the 21st century learning and how to get started. The second session was about some teaching and learning ideas on how to embed technology in inquiry learning. Then, the third session was delivered by some of the expertise teachers. I myself joined google 3D sketch up workshop. This workshop has given me a bunch of knowledge related to the 21st century learning and the application of ICT in the inquiry learning As she said in her explanation that, we, teachers, are now working with students whose entire life have been immersed in the 21st century media culture. She quoted from Marc Prensky about a digital native and digital immigrant. She explained that our students are all digital natives since they were born during or after the general introduction of digital technology, and through interacting with digital technology from an early age. They have a greater understanding of its concepts. On the other way around, digital immigrant is an individual who was born before the existence of digital technology and adopted it to some extent later in their life. They may be us, teachers.

With Jane Ross, the key note speaker of the ICT workshop

Jane Ross has given such an inspiring sharing of knowledge in her sessions as she gave some teaching and learning ideas on how to maximally use digital tools for learning and teaching. The strategies that I may use in my teaching and PD is:

How does the 21st Century Learning look like?

Based on http://www.pbs.org, the 21st century learning looks like:

– Interdisciplinary: different subject areas uniting to teach a common unit of work

– Integrated: different learning areas are blended to help students make important connection

– Project based learning: project based learning enables teachers and students

Interesting point:

 Teachers are working with student whose entire lives have been immersed in the 21st century media culture

 Technology has changed the way people work, collaborate, socialize, communicate, succeed (horizon 2010)

 Learning can happen anytime/ anywhere

 21st century learning is not simply to incorporate learning technology into current technology devices only but also challenge fundamental views about effective teaching and learning (Jane Ross, 2010)

 Teaching is sharing. Sharing deals with places, space, time etc how to make it meaningful and engaging, as well as an obligation to share? Sharing is about sharing your insight and ideas. (Shareski, 2010)

What teachers can do to start the 21st century learning?
